University of Galway

Established in 1845, University of Galway is one of the top 2% of universities in the world. We are a bilingual university, comprised of four colleges, 19 schools and five research institutes, with more than 19,000 students, including around 3,000 international students. We have more than 2,500 staff, and research collaborations with 4,675 international institutions in 137 countries. We have 110,000 alumni and 98% of graduates are in employment or further study within six months.

Our Innovation Office catalyses and accelerates the impact of our research and innovation with a strong track record of collaborating with industry, business and society. We do this by engaging with external stakeholders, working closely with our research community, and supporting new ventures. Since 2020, 13 spin-out companies have been established from the university, driving innovation and employment in our region and beyond.

Through our distinctive, industry-informed teaching programmes, like BioInnovate, TechInnovate and AgInnovate, we are helping to develop the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, giving them a platform to develop new technologies, launch new businesses and create dynamic careers.

Our university has teaching and research centres across the West and North-West of Ireland from Co. Clare to Co. Donegal. Ours is a distinctive region and we serve it with pride. We actively contribute towards building our region’s reputation as an internationally recognised centre of excellence for medtech, data science, culture and creativity, climate and oceans, public policy, and innovation.

In 2022, with our partners Ulster University, we launched the Atlantic Futures research project in collaboration with other higher education institutes across our region. This cross-border project will grow expertise, develop training and shape policy on important themes such as rural entrepreneurial ecosystems, business scaling, female entrepreneurship, digitalisation, freight connectivity and mental health.
